- Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’s Sustainable L.A. Farmhouse – L.A., California
“We wanted a home, not an estate,” Kunis insists of the interconnected main house and barn that was converted into a guesthouse/entertainment area and a freestanding barbecue pavilion, which they took five years to build from scratch on a six-acre land.
A mutual decision to hire Howard Backen of Backen & Gillam Architects was taken once they fell in love with his style of gleaning a contemporary farmhouse-chic tone from vernacular forms and rustic materials. The property houses a well, self-irrigated rolling farms, and photovoltaic that produces considerably more power than needed.

3. Jennifer Aniston’s cosy, chic California home
Jennifer Aniston, appreciative of materials that have some depth to them rather than just looking good was drawn to wood, stones, and bronze. Of course, the house needed to be glamorous, but her emphasis was on cultivating a warm and cozy but most importantly, comfortable and inviting space.
Along with Stephen Shadley, she strove to preserve the modernist character of the original structure but buffed out the sharp edges and interspersed organic and tangible interior finishes and texture into it. Vintage Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa, Jacques Adnet armchairs, and Mies van der Rohe sprinkled around are evidence of her classy tastes.
4. Sonam Kapoor’s artistic, vintage home in Mumbai
The Bollywood star composes an ode to the decorative arts of India in her ornate Mumbai home.
“This house represents a new chapter for me, as a woman, a collector—and a mother,” Kapoor declares of the new place, which she shares with her husband, entrepreneur Anand Ahuja, and their toddler son, Vayu. Having spent years in London, it was a deep-breath moment to make the decision to spend more time in Mumbai. “It was Anand who pushed for it, his argument being that with a baby on the way we should be closer to family,” she says. “I had bought this thoroughly modern, and slightly soulless, apartment as an investment years ago.” As a self-professed lover of old buildings, Kapoor didn’t love the idea of living in a high-rise. “As I spent more time in it, however, the double-height ceilings—so rare in this city—and the sweep of the lateral space began to seduce me,” she says. “I had been longing for a base in which to curate all the things I have collected while filming in far-flung locations over the years. And I relished the idea of creating a spectacle from sheer nothingness.” Image Courtesy : Architechtural Digest Website
5. Diplo’s Jungle Paradise
The preeminent German poet-philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously described architecture as “frozen music,” opining that “the state of mind produced by architecture is similar to the effect of music.” Over 150 years later, Frank Zappa—a somewhat less august personage, perhaps, but nevertheless prescient—reframed Goethe’s meditation on the corporeal and the ethereal: “Music, in performance, is a type of sculpture. The air in the performance space is sculpted into something,” Zappa professed. One wonders what type of music might be frozen in the bold volumes and interwoven planes of the Jamaican pleasure dome created by Grammy-winning celebrity DJ and producer Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo. Given his penchant for genre-bending and -breaking, mixing and remixing, the property reflects not so much a specific kind of music but Diplo’s approach to music and creativity in general. With its three dominant notes of concrete, wood, and lush greenery, the house feels like a mash-up of its rainforest setting, the land reconfigured and refined in ways that parallel the sampling and refashioning that are hallmarks of the musician’s practice. The rhythmic interplay of the artificial and the natural, the different pitches and textures of the various spaces, all offer a glimpse into Diplo’s dexterity as a songwriter and his intuitive grasp of what makes a project work.
6. Nina Dobrev’s European Inspired Casa
he most substantial change was the removal of a wall that had been a part of the building’s original 1929 architecture. Blocking off the dining room, it effectively created a cramped galley kitchen that Dobrev rarely used. That wasn’t too bad back when she was bouncing across the country to different sets, but, as Dobrev puts it, “my old kitchen was my 20s kitchen, and now this is my adult, 30s kitchen.”
Dobrev’s “adult” kitchen began with making the space more functional. First, she replaced the countertops, adding a butcher’s block for cooking and Dolomite slabs for durability. “I want to have kids in my home, and I have dogs, and I have friends over. . . I didn’t want to be paranoid and wipe down every counter every second,” Dobrev reflects.
7. Dakota Johnson’s Urban Mid-Century Home
The house was built by architect Carl Maston, and Johnson bought the residence four years ago, the second one that her realtor showed her on the single day she went to see L.A. properties. “I was immediately drawn to how it was clean but also cozy,” she says. “I thought, I’ll never want to sell this place.” She also liked the backstory: “Maston was buddies with Lautner and Neutra, and they’d all go to Musso & Frank’s together because there was a hostess that they were all in love with. Carl ended up marrying her, and this was the house they lived in.”
8. John Abraham’s Villa In The Sky in Mumbai
Aptly named ‘Villa in the Sky’, the 4,000-square-foot penthouse is located on the 7th and 8th floors of a residential complex in Bandra West. The design team of Abraham John, Alan Abraham, Anca Florescu, and Anahita Shivdasani combined two older apartments into one modern, spacious two-level flat and terrace. To combine the two apartments, all internal walls were stripped down and a new staircase, cantilevered off the interior columns, was added to connect the two floors. The spectacular views of the Arabian Sea are among the most attractive features of this home—and the new design just helped maximise it. This included putting in floor-to-ceiling windows wherever possible, including the massive new master bedroom. In fact, every room of the house provides sweeping views of the sea. The design of the penthouse reflects the modern minimalist style of the Mumbai-based architecture firm Abraham John. The open plan concept called for integrating indoor and outdoor spaces, maximising the benefits of the site location and the climate.

Warm wood accents on the exterior welcome visitors to the gated enclave that is minutes away from the celebrated Bel-Air Hotel. The main level of the nine-bedroom main home features a two-story living room with a curved staircase with wrought-iron railings. In addition to high ceilings, there is a bar, a fireplace, and steel windows and doors that open to a stone terrace with calming greenery. The estate’s outdoor living spaces are filled with native trees, bushes and plants.
11. Celine Dion’s Florida Home
Who wouldn’t want a water park in your home? THAT IS THE DREAM! There are five pavilions and two guest houses stationed around the winding expansive pool, according to the listing. The fun continues inside, where the family built an arcade, including table hockey, billiards, numerous race-car arcade games plus Skee-Ball and pinball machines. The back porch leads directly into a pool that’s larger than most people’s backyards. Beyond that is a winding lazy river that encircles a children’s playground including two waterslides connected by a rope suspension bridge.
