Specialising in unique and exquisitely designed rugs, The Rug Company is one of the foremost creators of handmade contemporary rugs. From artisanal Indian dhurries to designer creations by Paul Smith, Elie Saab, Vivienne Westwood and more, it is a one-stop-destination for unique works of art
Can rugs be categorised as art pieces? Rugs most definitely can be, especially the creations by The Rug Company. Specialising in unique and exquisitely designed handmade rugs, The Rug Company was created in 1997 by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp in London. The idea stemmed from a passion for quality, design, craftsmanship and service, credentials which have enabled it to transform an industry and establish The Rug Company as one of the leading names for handmade contemporary rugs.
The uniqueness of The Rug Company lies in its dedication to innovative and original design, while maintaining the exceptional quality achievable only by using the best traditional rugmaking skills. Each rug is made by hand by highly skilled artisans using the finest natural yarns; each rug is a precious and unique work of art.
The instant success of the London flagship showroom quickly led to expansion in the US, as The Rug Company opened its first showroom in New York’s Soho in 2002, followed by Los Angeles in 2005, Miami in 2008, Chicago in 2010, Dallas in 2011 and a second showroom in New York in 2012. The company opened their Middle East outlet with a flagship store in Dubai’s Al Serkal Avenue. There are now 24 The Rug Company showrooms worldwide, including the recently opened showroom in Munich and The Rug Company’s 4,500 sq ft concession in Harrods, London.
Renowned for its forward-thinking and imaginative designs, The Rug Company’s in-house experts have developed their own enviable array of rug designs in myriad colours and textures that are already becoming design classics of the future. In 2000, The Rug Company established its Designer Collection: a collaboration with 10 leading designers including Nina Campbell, Nicky Haslam and Cath Kidston. As its reputation grew, some of the world’s leading design talent joined the Designer Collection, including Paul Smith, Marni, Elie Saab, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg and Tom Dixon. Harnessing the unique vision of these world-class designers, The Rug Company works closely with each one to create timeless, collectible pieces. Service is paramount to the company, and as such every customer can expect a consultation on how to choose the best rug for their home.
The welcoming, intimate stores are a source of inspiration; however, the expert sales team also provide home service by taking rugs to a client’s home and providing consultation. The Rug Company also has a specialised Bespoke Service. The size, shape, pattern, yarn and colour of any design can be easily customised, or The Rug Company Studio is equipped to design a rug from scratch for any special commissions.
The Rug Company launched exquisite and entirely handmade cushions and wall hangings was 2009, diversifying their portfolio. The collection continues The Rug Company’s philosophy of meticulous craftsmanship, original design and the highest quality; each piece is made by hand, taking upto 14 weeks to make.
Each piece is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the wool to the weaving on the loom. It is unique and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generations. The Rug Company support the local skills and traditional craftsmanship, and to make a vital contribution to the economy of Nepal. As well as being a member of Good Weave, a non-profit that guarantees no child labour is used, it continually strives to improve the rugmaking process both environmentally and ethically.
The Rug Company has gone on to win various world-class awards including the Elle Decoration British Design Brand of the Year at the British Design Awards.
