Designer Tommy Hilfiger has been at the forefront of international fashion incorporating American styles with a twist. Alongside fashion, he has also created a lifestyle brand that stands out with its iconic signature. The brand recently signed on Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton as the Global Brand Ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger Men’s. In an exclusive interview with Signature, Tommy Hilfiger shares about the collaboration, his first car, and the Spring 2018 collection.
Why did you decide to partner with British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton?
I have always admired Lewis’ incredible endurance when racing, as well as his unique style off the track. He is a true inspiration to the new generation of “Tommy Guys”. Lewis regularly attends our shows and has been a long-time supporter of our brand. His cool, sophisticated approach to fashion reflects our brand spirit
What do you have in common with Lewis Hamilton?
Lewis and I share the belief that you must relentlessly follow your dreams, and when times are tough, you will always come out of it stronger. Lewis built his incredible career as a racing driver with passion, dedication and extremely hard work – qualities that I embraced when I founded my brand. I’m excited to welcome him into the Tommy Hilfiger family.
What are the key pieces from the Spring 2018 Men’s collections?
Everyone should have classic essentials, like the white pique polo from the men’s sportswear collection that can be styled with everything. A timeless, slim fit black suit from TOMMY HILFIGER TAILORED is a wardrobe staple, and the pieces can also be worn as separates to add a modern twist to a more casual look.
What do you love about motor sports?
I love the energy and sound of the cars racing and crowds cheering. It is a spectacular event to see live.
What was your first car?
When I was 16, having a driver’s license and a car meant being free. My first car was a $150 white 1960 Oldsmobile. Then, I traded it for the car of my dreams – a black 1959 Volkswagen Beetle. I sanded the whole thing, painted it green and buffed up all the chrome until it looked amazing.
Do you remember your first driving lesson? How many lessons did you to take before passing your driving test?
TOMMY: I never took driving lessons. I bought my first car when I was 15, and I knew how to drive it the day I got my license at 16-years-old.
What drives you in life?
My family! My wife Dee is my muse and she looks amazing in everything she wears. Whenever I’m creating a new collection I imagine how the designs would look on her. My children keep me young, and I’m so proud to watch them carve their own paths in life.
